Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Kent Shelhamer has announced that begin ning immediately the Department’s Bureau of Foods and Chemistry will, upon request, sample and test seed potatoes for viability. This is a new service being offered by the Department of Agriculture. 1.77 1.77 1.77 1.77 1.77 Shelhammer said that the service is being provided to help potato growers eliminate a problem that ' arose last season. 1.76 1.76 “Several shipments of seed stock received by our growers were suspected of having been subjected to chemical sprout inhibitor treatment. The fields planted with these seed potatoes showed a very unsatisfactory plant population,” Shelhammer explained. Hopefully, this service will help assure good yields from potato plantings.” Growers and dealers can do much on their own to determine the viability of seed potatoes when recieved, Shelhamer added. If the tubers exhibit no signs of sprouting, a sample should be taken from the lot and placed under conditions which normally would en courage sprouting.
