Md. tobacco exports strong in 1976
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Exports of Maryland Type
-32 tobacco more than
doubled in 1976 according to
a government report.
Looking at long term
trends, the 1976 export
figures got Maryland
tobacco about up to its 1969-
1973 averages of 10.3 million
pounds per year, worth $lO
million.
Maryland Secretary of
Agriculture Young D.
Hance, who has grown up
with tobacco, commented on
1976’s export figures for the
prized leaf saying, “I hope
this is a good sign. The
poundage increases indicate
foreign buyers are returning
to the market, and this, I
hope, will continue this year
for the 1976 crop.”
“As any grower knows,
export interrat in Maryland
tobacco is a key to the price
they will receive, and
tobacco, particularly Type
-32, is an expensive crop to
raise.”
“We have a good crop to
sell this year, about 28
million pounds. The quality
looks good but some growers

As usual, the Swiss were
the best foreign customers
for Maryland tobacco in
1976, buying about $7 million
worth. West Germany was
second with purchases of
almost $3 million, Belgium-
Luxembourg was third at
$1.23 million, France was
fourth at $l.OB million. The
other listed customers
buying in 1976 were: Egypt
($369,000), Norway
($336,000), Holland

Unexplained so far is the
