HOUSEHOLD R.D 3, Human beings and dog ticks share too cozy relationship UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., While men’s best friend may be his dog, the coziest relationship often exists between man and his dog’s ticks, entomologists at the Penn State University have observed. A study of ticks in numerous homes was carried out from 1974 through 1976 by Dr. Robert Snetsinger, professor of entomology, and Lee Gouty of State College, former graduate assistant in en tomology. “The most surprising phase of our observation was the apparent tolerance of the dog’s ticks,” Dr. Snetsinger stated. “Our examinations of premises were made at the request various dog owners,” he sdded. Even in wealthy or middle class homes, large numbers of brown dog ticks, sometimes 100 or more, were collected from mat tresses and bedding. Husbands complained about ticks crawling on them during the night. Small children were seen who had been bitten by ticks. FARMERSVILLE AUCTION TUESDAY, APRIL 19,1977 6:00 P.M. Pour homes were free of the brown dog tick after one treatment. Six homes were free of ticks after two treatments, and six more homes were free of ticks after three treatments. The second chemcial, bendiocarb, known as Ficam-W, gave rapid initial kill of brown dog ticks. Nine homes were free of ticks after one treatment and three homes required a second treatment after four months. Both Dursban and Ficam-W are cleared for use against brown dog ticks by the Environmental Protection Agency. “Extensive and regular treatments of the premises with“tickiqides” are generally required,” Dr. Snetsinger affirmed. “A Lancaster Farming. Saturday. April 16.1977 knowledge of the dog’s habits where it sleeps, and rest are important in an effective control program,” he added. Treatment of the dog alone by various means does not rid buildings of ticks, the Penn Staters pointed out, since ticks spend con siderable time off the “host” in cracks, crevices, and other niches. Owners were urged to treat their dogs at the time of household spraying. The spraying covered the dog’s sleeping area; cracks and crevices in walks, baseboards, and under rugs; and around the outer edges of carpets; items of furniture when necessary; and any THE GOOD WORD from fh JBihh “And as many as touched were made whole " Wouldn't it be wonderful if Christ walked the earth today and all who profess to be Christians might cure their ailments and turn aside their problems by merely touching the hem of his garment? If there were miracles for people to see, think how Christianity would grow and grow! Or, would it be so? If you read the Bible, you know that one would not have to be a Christian to touch the hem of Christ's garment Jesus never asked the qualifications of one who called out for help Many times he reminded his critics that his ministry was "to all people " Why, then, be a Christian? The answer is simple To be a Christian is to follow the example of Christ, to obey God's laws. This was the mission of Christ upon earth to show the way We shall see no miracles, but if we follow God's way, we shall be made whole. HAT & GAVEL AUCTION CD. During the 1960’5, the brown dog tick spread to every state and almost every city in the nation. Previously, it had been known from Texas to Florida and in a few urban areas, he increase was due mainly to increased pet travel. The brown dog tick in the more northern states is ex clusively a resident of homes, kennels, and veterinary hospitals. It is generally recom mended that a professional pest control expert be em ployed for a tick control program, rather than doing it yourself. 117
