Weekly 51 - Cattle -
Compared with the previous
week close -
Slaughter steers and
heifers steady to 25 cents
lower. Cows 50-1.00 higher
and bulls firm to 50 cents
higher.
Four Day receipts 11200 as
compared 15,000 previous
week and 14,200 a year ago.
Despite moderate
marketings and a reduced
daily rate of slaughter, fed
cattle prices again came
under considerable
pressure. Prices were forced
sharply downward on the
opening session, much of the
early downturn was
recovered later with demand
improved to some extent by
storm conditions which
rolled across the trade
territory. Several midwest
packers were out of
operation because of labor
difficulties and some others
reduced slaughter quotas in
reflection of poor cut-out
results. There was strong
seller resistence to the
continued price decline in
fed cattle prices and
marketings were sharply
curtailed after Monday. The
Steer and Heifer supply was
mianly good to average -
Choice. Steers made up
approximately 37 and heifers
40. Cows comprised 16 and
feeders short 5.
