Saturday, Feb. 12,1977 Import relief suggested for mushrooms WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U. S. International Trade Commission has recom mended to the President that import relief be provided to the U. S. mushroom in dustry. Three of the Com mission’s six members recommended the im position of a tariff quota of 48 million pounds, allocated by country. Imports in excess of the quota would be assessed an additional ad valorem duty of 25 per cent during the first three years of the quota, an additional ad valorem duty of 15 per cent during the fourth year of the quota and an additional ad valorem duty of five per cent during the fifth year of the quota. Two other Commissioners recommended adjustment assistance, which provides for financial and technical aid for workers, firms, and communities, as the ap propriate remedy for the mushroom industry. One Commissioner did not participate. The Commission’s in vestigation on mushrooms, its second since March 1976, was instituted following a request for an expedited investigation received from the Special representative for Trade Negotiations. The request from STR preceded a USITC determination that there was good cause for a reinvestigation within one year. Jones on board STBASBURG, Pa. - John W. TRY A CLASSIFIED AD! Slurry gun shown LANCASTER, Pa. - A demonstration of the new slurry gun liquid manure pump was held February 8 on the Charnelle Manor Farm owned by Charles and Nelson Habecker, Lan caster, R 2. Approximately 40 farmers and interested persons were present to see the demonstration. In the Habecker system, a bam cleaner removes the manure from a dairy herd of about 60 cows to an un derground holding pit out side the bam. When this pit is filled, the slurry is pumped to an above ground storage silo where it is stored until it is spread on the fields. The slurry gun can be used for all pumping operations in the farm system. And, with the pump’s positive displacement, it can handle manure with more solids to reduce the number of spreader trips to the field. The farmers discussed their present systems and this idea in liquid manure han dling over coffee and doughnuts. A movie of the slurry gun operating in various in stallations in the U.S. and Canada was also shown. The slurry gun is manufactured in Canada and imported by Delta Pump Company, Lancaster, Pa. Delta is the distributor of the pump in the Lancaster area and is marketing it on a national scale. GARBER OIL CO.
