MORE MILK MEANS MORE w “Serving The Needs of the Agricultural Community” CAUL —717 4^!4532 Weekly 51 - Cattle - compared with the previous weeks close Closing prices slaughter steers weak to 50 cents lower than limited late trading of previous week, or 50-1.00 lower than at midweek. Heifers 50-75 cents lower than late previous week. Cows and bulls steady. Four day receipts 14,900 compared 14,900 previous week and 19,000 a year ago. Severe winter storm con ditions over the eastern part of the United States and bitter cold in the midwest created considerable bearishness in the cattle trade as movement of carcass beef eastward slowed to a virtual standstill early. Local marketings were of modest proportions but demand was not broad in view of the poor relationship between current live prices and carcass realizations; in addition, slaughter results were often disappointing, partially in reflection of severe weather conditions. The overall finish of the steer and heifer supply was only moderately attractive with a predominance of good to average choice. Steers made up approximately 37 per cent, and heifers 39 per cent, cows comprised 17 per cent, feeders only 5 per cent.
