—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Jan. 15, 1977 20 Lass leads 4 Cass 9 to top of class Tina Rutter and her champion. HARRISBURG - Alisa Marie Fava, a Washington County lass, showing her 4- year old cow, “Apple Brook Corporal Cass,” captured the grand and senior championships in Guernsey judging competition at the 61st Farm Show, repeating a performance of the 1976 Farm Show. Reserve grand champion was “Honey Crest Favor Harriett,” a 5-year old cow owned by Brian Lehman, of York. The same animal also was judged reserve senior champion. Junior champion was “Pen Col Darling Poppy,” a senior yearling exhibited by Dennis Wolff, of Millville, Columbia County. Tina Rutter, of 53 Lightner Road, York, showed the reserve junior champion, “Rutter Bros Laddies Wini,” a senior yearling. Snider Homestead Farm, PRODUCTION ASSETS ON AVERAGE U.S. FARM DOUBLES IN THE PAST SIX YEARS In 1970 the average value of all production assets on all U.S. farms was $103,600. This had increased in 1976 to $211,687. The major reason for this increase has been the tremendous inflation in land values during this period, says Frederick A. Hughes, Extension farm management specialist, The Pennsylvania State University. There has been increased demand by far mers for farm enlargements in addition to a sharp in crease in demand for land as an investment alternative for off-farm investors. Obviously this expanded capital requirement has generated a great need for more credit in agriculture. Debts on U.S farms in creased from an average of about $lB,OOO in 1970 to $32,500 in 1976. Very few farmers have enough cash available to finance land of New Enterprise, Bedford County, won both premier exhibitor and premier breeder awards. GUERNSEY (JUNIOR) In the youth division, Alisa Marie Fava, won the championship, while reserve junior champion honors went to “Honey Crest Favor Harriett,” a 5-year old cow shown by Brian Lehman. Alisa is a member of the Pike Run 4-H Club and Brian is a member of the York County 4-H Dairy Club. Results' of the show are printed below: HEIFER CALF 1. Celestine & Karpa & Clem, Avella; 2. Benedict, Michael M, machinery and livestock in a fanning operation. This is especially true of our younger farmer who wishes to get started in fanning today. A young farmer starting in farming today with con siderable borrowed capital will have to be a very astute manager with a tremendous knowledge of technology. With the large capital in vestment in land and machinery the risk is very high compared to 10 or 20 years ago. The net returns from a dollar input can be wiped out very rapidly with unfavorable weather con ditions, a sharp drop in the pnce of commodities being produced, or a serious insect or disease problem The young farmer must con stantly be aware of the risk factors and be prepared to cope with them if he is going to maintain a net cash flow to keep up to high debt pay Jits in toddy’s agriculture, adds Hughes Waynesboro, 2.
