MULTIFLORA ROSE PROBLEM A control program against multiflora rose bushes was established last Summer and a chemical - Tordon-IOK - which was used to combat the plant, required enough caution so that training meetings were set up to inform farmers about multiflora rose and programs designed to eliminate it. The multiflora rose was also defended, however, for excellent wildlife qualities. At one time, in fact, the plant was being recommended to farmers by a government agency. The Summer of 1976 saw another agency get involved - but in the opposite direction. It had people wondering what was going on. Joyce Bupp, who now writes regularly for Lan caster Farming, won a national essay contest in July. The Bicentennial essay contest was sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Federation. As winner, the 30-year old York County woman won a trip to the annual AFBF convention in Hawaii. Crop insurance hit a new high in 1976 - $2 billion. SUPERCROPS The year up until mid-July was “really good for growing, crops.” Most crops were ahead of schedule in their growing stages and earlier than usual harvests were being predicted. Com was doing exceptionally well, with a number of fields showing tassle since about July 10. Many com stalks m southeastern Pennsylvania had reaphed six feet high July 4/ The bumper crop which- came about was clearly in sight. Tobacco had also been responding very well to the hot and humid- weather which had favored the area for the past several weeks. According to Arnold Lueck, county agricultural agent, tobacco was 10 to 14 days ahead of schedule. Lueck believed the crop was ac tually growing a little too fast, pointing out that “it’s a soft kind of growth which doesn’t cause the leaves to get bigger ... the plant is just adding more leaves.” A bit of dry weather would help the situation, he commented. Lueck predicted an early harvest of tobacco, but not significantly bigger yields. Soybeans were described with just one word in mid July - “excellent.” READY SUPERIOR for any rotation or grain, forage, sudangrass m Corn, Sorghum, Alfalfa Randy Ranck of Quarryville became State FFA President in June of 1976. The hay crop picture wasn’t so bright. There was plenty of hay out there, but with the moist weather, few really good bales were being brought in by the average farmer. Those who had good hay in their bam were the exception. MANURE MANAGEMENT Manure management increased in importance and this newspaper covered several meetings to that effect and featured more than one installation during the past year. One of them was the hydraulic ram operation on the Calvin Beiler farm near Christiana. At the three-quarter mark, the wheat harvest in the area continued 10 look satisfac tory in both yield and quality. Quality was going down, however, as the days progressed. Moisture per centages were up and some sprouting was actually being reported. In no way, however, was it the kind of nightmare the farmers experienced in 1973 when LOW INITIAL COST.
