made a highly successful
change from town-oriented
activities to FFA mem
bership. An academic
student with a career in
medicine in mind, Miss
Bender joined FFA because
of the activities it offered.
She excelled in several FFA
judging contests.
“It is up to you to let the
public know how things are
on the farm,” congressman
Bob Kastenmeier (D. -Wis.)
told a group of dairy fanners
at a conference in
Washington in April.
FFA dairy judges from
Ephrata High School won a
state judging contest in mid
April. Members of the first
place team were Bob Fox,
Linford Frey, Kevin Smoker,
and Mark Weiler.
PEACHY WEEKEND
The second annual Peach
Blossom Festival began at
Maple Lawn Farms on April
24. Home of Paul and Gail
McPherson, the young
couple is highly active in
promoting agriculture - and
especially peaches. Mc-
Pherson is president of the
National Peach Council.
“Hog cholera outbreak
possibly introduced
by outlawed vaccines,” read
a headline appearing in the
April 24 issue of Lancaster
Farming. Making the ac
cusation was the USDA, and
they had evidence to prove
it.
Two University of
Maryland professors and a
Cecil County cattleman were
named “Outstanding
Spokesmen for Agriculture”
in a nationwide contest. The
farmer, Henry Holloway has
been a PR man for
agriculture for years, and
was featured in numerous
newspaper articles, in
cluding Lancaster Farming.

fashioned construction
techniques to erect the new
bam. The new building was
put up for calves, feeder pigs
and an auction ring. While
all that in itself was
newsworthy, an interesting
detail was that joints were
made with mortise and peg -
a construction principle
which isn’t seen too often
anymore, except where the
Amish are. Amishmen were,
in fact, doing the work on the
new building.
Cloister FFA land judges
dominated the Lancaster
County contest last year
when Curtis Martin tapped
the individual list and the
school team outdistanced its
rivals.

of last year. The College of
Agriculture thereby became
the fifth largest in the nation
with 3,463 undergraduates
enrolled, in ag curnculums.
Farm editors from all
across the United States met
in Washington, D. C. in late
April. Among their activities
were meetings with ag
spokesmen on Capitol Hill
and President Ford. One of
the many bits of news to
come out of it was that world
grain production was ex
panding and that demand for
U.S. grain abroad would
slacken a bit for the near
future.
