An academic student with a career in medicine in mind, Miss Bender joined FFA because of the activities it offered. She excelled in several FFA judging contests. “It is up to you to let the public know how things are on the farm,” congressman Bob Kastenmeier (D. -Wis.) told a group of dairy fanners at a conference in Washington in April. FFA dairy judges from Ephrata High School won a state judging contest in mid April. Members of the first place team were Bob Fox, Linford Frey, Kevin Smoker, and Mark Weiler. PEACHY WEEKEND The second annual Peach Blossom Festival began at Maple Lawn Farms on April 24. Home of Paul and Gail McPherson, the young couple is highly active in promoting agriculture - and especially peaches. Mc- Pherson is president of the National Peach Council. “Hog cholera outbreak possibly introduced by outlawed vaccines,” read a headline appearing in the April 24 issue of Lancaster Farming. Making the ac cusation was the USDA, and they had evidence to prove it. Two University of Maryland professors and a Cecil County cattleman were named “Outstanding Spokesmen for Agriculture” in a nationwide contest. The farmer, Henry Holloway has been a PR man for agriculture for years, and was featured in numerous newspaper articles, in cluding Lancaster Farming. The College of Agriculture thereby became the fifth largest in the nation with 3,463 undergraduates enrolled, in ag curnculums. Farm editors from all across the United States met in Washington, D. C. in late April. Among their activities were meetings with ag spokesmen on Capitol Hill and President Ford. One of the many bits of news to come out of it was that world grain production was ex panding and that demand for U.S. grain abroad would slacken a bit for the near future.
