An explanation of cow indexes and methods of practical application are detailed in the report prepared by Ray H. Kliewer, director of Program Development and Research, HFA. Information contained in the report was first presented at the Fourth World Friesian Conference, in London, England. Cow indexes, as they are computed in the United States, estimate the tran smitting ability of specific cows. The index evaluates cow families by including the cow’s own production and that of her paternal sisters.
