88—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Nov. 27, 1976 Montgomery Loimty OWT DHM year ended; NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Hie Montgomery County Dairy Herd Improvement Association held its annual meeting earlier this month and recognized a number of the top herds in the program. A special highlight of the evening was the selection and crowning of Cindy Waltemyer as the County’s new dairy princess. She will represent Montgomery County’s dairy industry for the next 12 months and compete for the state title in June of 1977. The County had 59 herds on test for the recently completed year, with an average of 65 cows per herd. The average production per cow was 12,916 pounds of millk, 3.9 per cent test, and 501 pounds of butterfat. The figure for milk is up by 64 pounds over a year ago, while the butterfat average remained the same. In 1975 there were 3985 cows on test in the County, this year there were 3824. The average value of milk sold per cow was calculated at $1373, which is slightly above the state average even though production statistics are significantly below state average figures. Due to significantly higher feed costs in the area, however, the value of the milk after feed costs is $4B below the state level, ($753 to $BOl, respectively.) (> The high herd for the year belongs to Harold K. Halteman, Telford Rl, whose 60 Holsteins checked in with an average of 17,274 pounds of milk and 641 of butterfat per head. He credits a sound feeding program, detailed production records, and breeding selectivity for accomplishing the feat. His herd ranked second in the County a year ago. Following Halteman, m order, were the following herds; Robert Moses, Schwenksville R 2,104 Holsteins producing an average of 16,293 M and 592 F per head. George Seneko, Jr. 48 Holsteins, 14,525 M and 584 F. Merrill Mest, Obelisk, 28 Holsteins producing an average of 14,525 M per head and 584 of butterfat. Placing fifth was Merrill Ruth, Telford Rl, with 72 Holsteins averaging 15,179 pounds of milk and 580 of fat. Of the 59 herds tested for the complete year, 15 eclipsed the 550 pounds of butterfat mark, while 34 surpassed the 500 hurdle. Four failed to break the 400 barrier, with three of the four being Holstein herds. The 1976 high butterfat cow for Montgomery County is owned by the new dairy princess, Miss Waltemyer, who is pictured on this page with one of her prized Jerseys at Walebe Farms, Collegeville.
