—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Nov. 6, 1976 60 Maryland soils team wins 9 straight COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The soil judging team from the University of Maryland’s agronomy department recently captured the Northeast regional collegiate soil judging championship for the ninth consective year. Three teams from the College Park campus finished first, second and fourth among 20 teams from seven colleges and universities to again assure the school championship for Maryland. This year’s eighteenth annual contest was held in Maryland, with practice locations on both sides of the Chesapeake Bay. Actual contest site was near Cumberstone, on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution’s Chesapeake Bay Center for En vironmental Studies, north of Galesville on the south shore of the Rhode river. Two members of Maryland’s “B” team finished first and third in the individual standings, and the four members of the* “A” team - captured fourth through seventh spots. Top individual was Michael J. Fisher of Cockeysville, a chemistry junior with summer job experience in the agronomy deparment’s soils laboratory. Third through seventh place individuals, respec tively, were as follows: William J. McMahon of Kensington, Byron D. Huang from the Aspen Hill- Glenmont area of Wheaton, Wayne M. Maresch of Laurel, Scott R. Stanley from the Belair Town section of Bowie, and M. Kathleen Huey of Galena. York Mall display celebrates National Farm Wife Month YORK, Pa. - The York County farm woman is a diversely active lady on the farm, off the farm, and in many special ways. The truth of this statement will be evident at the York Mall Nov. 12 and 13 in celebratiion of National Farm Wife Month. Sponsored by York County Farmers’ Association, the event will be a colorful array of country crafts displayed and demonstrated by women who will be available to talk farm philosophy and facts to non-farm counterparts on a woman to woman, person to person level. The commodity craft section will feature a milk carton container village, painted milk cans, egg carton crafts, egg shell plantings, pumpkin painting, peach crafts, dried apple dolls, com cob and com husk dolls, and wreaths as well as wine making and canned goods highlighted by homemade sauerkraut and catsup. In the country craft cor ner, quilting will be demonstrated on the quilting racks; and painting demonstrations will be held as well as dried flower Delaware Valley third, Penn State fifth A student from the University of Maine at Orono and four represen tatives from the University of Maryland at College Park had a lesson on live snapping turtles following the Northeast regional collegiate soil judging contest held in Maryland on Oct. 16. The quintet posed with a representative of the Maryland sports mascot following an awards banquet at the Wye Institute near Queenstown on the Eastern Second-place individual in the contest was Alan Pinkham of Damariscotta, Maine. Pinkham helped lead the Maine team to a second place finish in the school standings - the highest placing in several years for a team from the Pine Tree State. Main is scheduled to host the 1977 Northeast arranging and gingham flower making. Apple cut ting sculpture and sand art, decoupage, cake decorating, crewel and needle point, basket weaving, Rya weaving, * pine cone craft, and Christmas items will brighten up the mall. Pieces of refinished furniture will hold display items. Since farmers, especially the females, are big savers, a special section on recycled farm junk will catch the eye of ecology buffs. Twine wreaths, a peach crate doll house, bottle dolls, acryllic preserved peach pits and other items make up a fanciful exhibit. Country kids will come to life m color slide presen tations, while the awareness of God’s Greatness will be captured in a montage of country landscape pictures.
