All of the entries in the ring were champions in their own right. At stake was the honor of being “champion of champions.” Symbolic of that honor is the Agnes Tilghman trophy, a large - silver plate which measures over two feet in length and 17 inches wide. It’s presented here annually at the con clusion of the Eastern National Livestock Show. Purdy, with hands in his pockets, skirted the P. 8.1. ECONOLINE BUCKET ELEVATORS /C3P\ 2000 to 6000 BUSHEL/HR. An official at ringside explained that it doesn’t take a'man like Purdy long to pick out the best. Stepping up to the microphone, Purdy an nounced that all 15 of the animals before him showed “economically important traits.” Continuing his reasoning, he said “They all have size, thickness, growth, and have done wet! - it’s a little difficult to try and compare breeds. But after having studied all three the Charolais have to win it again.” T. Courtney Jenkins, chairman of the board of directors for the ENLS, Riverwood Farms' top Charolais cattle. presented the large silver plate to Riverwood Farms, of Powell Ohio. It was the second year in a row that the Midwestern Charolais farm won the high honor. The Agnes Tilghman trophy was produced about six years ago in memory of a Hereford breeder by the same name who had the oldest continuous Hereford herd in the United States at that time. Mrs. Tilghman had her herd on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The trophy named in her honor and memory rotates an nually to the exhibitor who showed the very finest cattle at the ENLS.
