You need not be [Continued from Page 93] At any rate, even though it is a different situation today, at one time there had been quite a few wineries in the area. Now, however, the number has dwindled to as low as four or five in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. If the law of supply and demand applies in this case as it does in almost all others, then each winery should be very valuable because they are so rare. And, so it is—at least for the visitor —with Pequea Valley Vineyard and Winery, Rawlinsville Road, Willow Street. An afternoon tour of the winery is a valuable ex perience both for the en joyment, and the cultural and agricultural enrichment received. On the way to the winery, the drive is tranquil and lulling as the roads wind through the hills and valleys of Pequea, past the lazily flowing streams, peaceful farms, and quaint country villages. Then, like a Pandoras Box, the lane to the establishment opens up a new world of excitement and hustle and bustle as scattered groups of people wander around the farm-turned-winery. The tour of the winery, which takes place Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 5, is free. It is also extremely interesting and pleasurable. Lasting only an hour, which passes in a second, the tour highlights the major areas of the wine making process, and ends up in the tasting room where small samples of each variety are given out. Not only will a farm visitor be captivated by the unique wine making business with its huge, aging casks and smaller barrels, its laboratory for completing each particular wine recipe, and its pressing and fer menting machines, but he will also be interested in seeing how the one-time dairy and tobacco farm was renovated into a unique and fascinating winery. What had once been the tobacco cellar has been turned into the aging cellar with huge casks of wine just waiting patiently until their time is up and they are ready for bottling. THE MUSTANG TRACK A & C Part of the enjoyment of Pequea Valley Vineyard and Winery is learning about the grape growing The milk house has become a laboratory, and the stables have become the bottling, pressing, and fermenting areas. The upper areas of the barn, such as the hay mow and grain bins, have been turned into the sampling and sales rooms. To top off the enlightening tour, samples of the various wines made at the establish ment are poured for the visitor’s tasting delight. This can also be a learning ex perience, as the unenlightened wine drinker learns to differentiate bet ween the various varieties. If, however, at the end of the tour, you still have a quest for more knowledge, any visitor is welcome to look over the vineyards which are coming into season right now, and which will be harvested through the early part of November. In total, the winery, which opened only three years ago in June of 1973, has 30 acres of vineyards on the property through which to explore. All in all, an afternoon & V M.Sm business.
