It was a busy time. June Jufy Ida Risser Besides the planned ac tivities, we took him to tourist attractions and a museum. He also had the opportunity to go to Wild wood, N. J., with cousins from Mt. Joy who he didn’t even know he hao living here. He had never seen fireflies before and was quite in trigued by them. We learned some interesting facts about his family, too, which showed up the differences in our backgrounds. He said that they like to just sit and look at the sky - sounds like a real luxury. And when I was canning apricots, he told me his Mother cans “pur ple” peaches for him by dyeing them. Also his Grandfather was killed in a gold mine many years ago and his Grandmother was so delighted with water from a spigot, that after living in an arrid area, she would just let it run and run over her hands when she moved to town. When we saw the won derful movie at the Tourist Information Center on Sunday, we met an Oriental family from California. It has been said the native Lancaster Countians are conservative and not too welcoming, and I guess it’s true of some, so I was a bit surprised to hear myself invite them to visit our dairy farm. The “Yee” family with their three children came that night after eatmg at a restaurant we recom mended. They arrived in a camper-truck and were shown the milk parlor, milkhouse, cows, pigs, rabbits, geese, and new puppy. Oh yes, the garden and our old house too. Mr. Yee is a school teacher, and it was our pleasure to share a few hours with them. 3M, Junior Cooking Edition [Continued from Page 52] 2-3 cup soft butter 2 ounces melted un sweetened chocolate 3 A teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons milk Lorrene Newswanger Morgantown, Pa. Kerstetter recently cautioned con sumers against purchasing defective jar lids. The secretary noted that a study recently completed by the Agricultural Experiment Station at Pennsylvania State University indicated that several brands of jar lids on the market today showed poorly in canning tests. “For the past couple of years,” said Kerstetter, “there has been a sharp rise in the numbers of people canning their own fruits and vegetables. The demand outstripped supplies of non reusable jar lids and shor tages developed. “Since last year,” Ker stetter continued, “new lid and beat very stiff. The stiffer the egg whites, the better the mixture will turn out. Mix with chocolate mixture. Bake in tube pan in a 325 degree F. oven for 60 to 65 minutes. Samuel Stoltzf us Gordonville, Pa. Jane Zimmerman Leola, PA warns of jar lids manufacturers have stepped in to pick up the slack. Some of these brands have not tested out well.” Of eight brands that were tested, according to the report, a brand manufac tured in Taiwan by Iberia, USA Inc., proved the most defective. The eight types of lids were tested against lids manufactured by Ball Corp. of Muncie, Ind., which had shown no failures in any treatments. A total of 64 lids of each brand were tested for canning apples and green beans. When a failure to seal could not be attributed to food entrapment between the lid and jar or to jar defects, the lid was declared defective. With the Iberia brand, 57 of the 64 lids failed to seal. A total of 23 lids rusted. Other brands that did not test well were, Rockwell, distributed by American Service Corp. of Somerset, Pa.; Jar-Lid Corp., New York, N.Y.; and Plast-O- Top, Plast-O-Product Co., Milton, Del.
