Other such “no-fee” hog marketing facilities around the country handle as many as 200,000 hogs per day, according to Emery. Penn Packing, a 20-year old company, draws hogs from 14 states and sells its pork and ham, etc. all along the East Coast. Penn Packing will be quoting hog prices out of the “Green Dragon” on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. They’ll open at 8 a.m. and continue operating through one o’clock in the afternoon. All the farmer has to do is pick up his phone and ask for the hog price for the day. ‘Tf he likes the price he is quoted, he bads his hogs up and brings them to the market,” explained Emery. “The hogs are weighed immediately, there is no shrink as there would be in an auction market where hogs wait to be sold,” he continued. Furthermore, there is no deduction taken out of the check for selling costs. “This method of selling hogs is the only way a farmer actually knows what he is going to get for his hogs when he loads them on his truck,” Emery added. Emery and Penn Packing see continued “big growth” in Lancaster County’s sprawling agricultural marketing network, and that “there’s great potential here.” The move to direct , marketing was made to take advantage of the expanding hog industry here, Emery noted.
