—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 8, 1976 City youths receive Penny Fulmer, a senior at McCaskey High School, received three of the top twelve awards given at the first annual banquet of the Hans Herr Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. The banquet recognized the outstanding achievements by the students who study floriculture and horticulture at the Willow Street Vo-Tech School. Miss Fulmer received the Outstanding Senior Award given by DeKalb. According to chapter advisor Jim Kerr who presented the award, it recognized her ac complishments, her scholarship and her leadership. She received a certificate, plaque and pin. Miss Fulmer also received the Star Agribusinessman award, the placement in agriculture production award and was one of two students to be given the banker's award. Dale Herr, a student at Lampeter-Strasburg received the other banker’s award, presented by Mervin Blank. Two awards went to Marcia Hess of Solanco who was named Star Chapter Farmer. She also received the county star farmer award, a check from the county vocational agriculture instructors. Lauren Martin, a student at Lancaster Mennonite High School, received the Star Greenhand Award to recognize his “hard work and accomplishments.” Martin presided at the banquet as master of ceremonies. Five FFA Foundation awards, presented by agricultural companies to increase effort and interest in agriculture, according to Kerr, were given to Dan Sauer and Sue Weaver, both McCaskey students in ornamental horticulture. Cheryl Hershey, a Pequea Valley student, received a floriculture award. Another placement in agriculture production award was given to John LeFever, a Penn Manor student. Speaker for the evening was irooper Martin Wenzier, youth aide officer with the Pennsylvania State Police. He explained that his role is to act as contact with those under 18 who come into contact with the state police. He said he works with juveniles, courts and agencies which work with youth. He said, “We try to keep abreast of new problems. The mobility which young people enjoy today causes problems, according to Trooper Wenzier. “Kids get around fast. Trooper Wenzler said he considers it a privilege to work with young people in organizations like FFA, FHA and Girl Scouts. He said these groups help create “responsible young people.” He commended the adults who work with P’FA, adding “FFA gets young people on the road to being good citizens.” A special award was given by the students to Mrs. Doris Bushong, the other chapter advisor. Kerr reviewed some of the work of the chapter, noting that it was January, 1975 that the Hans Herr Chapter received its charter. He commended the parents who were present, saying “The parents are the most im portant-people here this evening.” The buffet meal was prepared and served by students at Willow Street Vo-Tech.
