Guidelines For

Incandescent Lights
The concept of the light
bulb has changed little since
Edison’s first “electric
lamp.” But the variety of
bulbs now available can be
confusing. I would like to
offer some background to
find the right bulb type to fit
your needs.
An inside frosted bulb,
often called the “standard
bulb,” is etched on the inside
surface to soften its light.
This type is the least ex
pensive.
For a softer, diffused light
which offers less glare,
choose a toft white bulb. It
has a silica coating, rather
than etching on the inside,
and gives off slightly less
light than a standard bulb.
Soft-wblte-plus bulbs
contain a special filament
which stays relatively cool
when a bulb is lit. They last
50 to 100 percent longer than
standard bulbs, but cost
more. Use these for soft
diffused light or in a hard-to
get-at fixture. You won’t
have to change them as often
as some other bulbs.
A special filament gives
long-life bulbs their lasting
power about three times
as long as standard bulbs.
But the extended service
comes at the cost of the light
output. Choose one if your
main concern is lasting
power. Its filament burns

with a slightly yellow light.
Some light manufacturers
use krypton, an inert gas, to
improve the efficiency and
increase the life of the bulbs.
Krypton-filled bulbs are
more expensive, often
double the cost of standard
bulbs. But they’re worth the
expense if you want a high
efficiency bulb.
FHA Loans Available
For Rut's! Homeowners
Many rural homes are in
need of repair or im
provement. If yours is one of
these you may be eligible for
a loan from the Farmers
Home Administration of the
United States Department of
Agriculture.
There are home im
provement and repair loans
to bring houses up to
minimum property stan
dards or to remove health or
safety hazards. The type of
loan depends on income. If
income is so low only health
and safety hazards can be
removed you may be eligible
for a repair loan.
If your income is
somewhat higher, you may
get a home improvement
loan to bring your home up to
the Farmers Home Ad
ministrations’ minimum
property standards.
Generally,. you can use
repair loans to remove
health hazards by repairing
roofs, providing a sanitary
water and waste disposal
system that meets local
health department
requirements, installing
screens, windows or in
sulation or taking other steps
to make your home safe.
Home improvement loans
may include similar pur
poses, but in addition, you
may make changes such as
adding rooms, remodeling
