The number of milk cows in the commonwealth during January was 709,000 head, up three percent from a year earlier United States milk production during January is estimated at 9,545 million pounds, up two percent from a year earlier. U.S. milk production per cow averaged 862 pounds, 25 pounds more than a year ago and 34 pounds above January 1974. Milk cows on farms totaled 11,079,000 head, down one percent from a year earlier and two percent below January 1974.
