Tobacco buyers have been
visiting tobacco sheds and
stripping rooms, but so far
there isn’t much talk of
prices. Demand for tobacco
is reportedly strong. No one
cared to make predictions

was that the tobacco market
is “highly unpredictable.” A
rough guess would be that
prices are likely to be in the
same ballpark as they were
a year ago.
Whitmore said he was
“somewhat amazed’’ about
the few entries and also
noted the quality wasn’t as
pronounced. This is not to
say that the tobacco is of low
quality, however. As
Whitmore put it:
“Everybody should be
commended, we would just
like to see more.”
Hostetter and Whitmore
both acknowledged having
seen some “nice tobacco,”
both at the show and on
farms. Hostetter described
the samples in the contest as
being good, considering the

Hostetter suggested that the
market situation could be
unproved if farmers were to
grade their tobacco rather
than mix it all. He noted
there’s been talk of that for
years, but it has never
become a widely accepted
procedure. Agricultural
extension officials at the
contest made similar
remarks.
All of the tobacco shown at
the Farm and Home Center
will be taken to the Farm
Show in Harrisburg.
