Know your tree
When you go shopping for
your Christmas tree can you
tell one species of pine tree
from another or a pine tree
from a spruce?
Proper identification is
important if you want a tree
that will hold its needles the
longest or if you are selec
ting for appearance. .
The needles on pine trees
grow m clusters or groups.
The pines most frequently
sold in this area are the
Scotch, Austrian, and white.
Scotch and Austrian pines
have two needles bound
together at the base. The
Scotch has medium-soft
needles about 1% to 3 inches
long. Austrian pine needles
are very stiff and 3 to 4 in

White pine trees always
have five needles in a
cluster. An easy way to
remember this is one needle

“white.”
Spruce trees have single
needles. They are four-sided
or square and can be rolled
easily between your thumb
and first finger. Fir needles
are flat and won’t roll.
Remember “S” for square
or spruce and “F” for flat or
fir.
The Extension leaflet
“Indoor Care of Christmas
Trees and Greens,” will help
you identify these Christmas
tree species. Get your free

Extension Service office.

beloved horse named Dan Patch, a crooked-legged bay bom
in 1896 and the first race horse to earn a million dollars
