Proper identification is important if you want a tree that will hold its needles the longest or if you are selec ting for appearance. . The needles on pine trees grow m clusters or groups. The pines most frequently sold in this area are the Scotch, Austrian, and white. Scotch and Austrian pines have two needles bound together at the base. The Scotch has medium-soft needles about 1% to 3 inches long. Austrian pine needles are very stiff and 3 to 4 in ches long. White pine trees always have five needles in a cluster.
