TRY A CLASSIFIED Cattle trucking WASHINGTON - livestock handlers and feedlot operators arc generally satisfied with unregulated cattle trucking services, according to a report Issued today by the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture. USDA's Economic Research Service found that over nine-tenths of the sample feedlots In all size groups and four-fifths of the handlers in nearly all size groups reported satisfactory service during 1972. Data are from questionnaires returned by over 700 livestock shippers. Almost all cattle and calves were transported by truck, and about four-fifths of the trucking was by tor ture carriers. Nearly half of all livestock handlers and 8 percent of all feedlots reported they bad difficulty in hiring truckers during months of peak cattle movements. Larger shippers had more trouble obtaining trucking services than smaller ones. Although for hire livestock transportation capacity was apparently in short supply during peak demand periods, private transportation was not widely used. Less than one* fifth of all cattle and calves transported by truck moved by private carriage. According to shippers, only 35 head per 100,000 shipped died in transit. Excessive weight losrf of animals was not common, but it was reported more often by larger shippers than smaller ones. Animal weight loss in transit was caused most often by the length of time in transit, animal condition prior to loading, and weather conditions at the time of loading.
