70 —Lancaster Farming, Saturday. Oct. 11, 1975 Milk price increases explained WASHINGTON When U.S, Secretary of Agriculture announced the increased support prices for manufacturing milk last week, he gave the following explanation: ‘‘The decision to raise the support price is based on a thorough review of the dairy situation.” Milk production this marketing year has consistently been below that of a year ago, while consumption of milk and dairy products has increased steadily. Consequently, dairy products have been in short supply in recent months. With short supplies, market prices of milk and dairy products in recent weeks have been substantially above current support levels; however, Secretary Butz said last week's increase was necessary to give producers the assurance they need to stay in dairying and insure adequate supplies. The Secretary stated that the higher support will have no effect on current retail prices of milk and dairy products. Wholesale product prices already are above the level of support. Therefore retail prices are expected to increase during the next few months even without an increase in support, and to decline relatively little during the last quarter of the year when wholesale prices are expected to drop. The prices CCC will pay for butter, nonfat dry milk, and cheese, in order to carry out the new level of support for milk, are shown in the following data. The price at which CCC will sell nonfat dry milk back to the industry for unrestricted use has also been increased, in keeping with the Department’s policy of setting sales prices of butter, cheese and nonfat dry milk at approximately 115 percent of CCC’s current purchase prices. At present nonfat dry milk is ‘he only dairy product available for sale for unrestricted use. (See press release No. 2876*75 issued today.)
