Young Stewart lives with his parents on a dairy and crop farm near the Mason-Dixon Line in northeast Maryland. By coincidence, the last Maryland winner of the regional 4-H tractor operators contest was also a Harford county represen tative. He was Herbert Harkins of Forest Hill, who won the event in 1969. Since 1970, the winner’s trophy has been named in his memory. Other competitive ac tivities during the Eastern U.S. 4-H Engineering Event at Richmond, Va., on Sept. 23 included a small engines contest and an automotive care and safety contest. Some 21 states were represented in one or more of the three contests, with 18 participants in the tractor competition. Brian Graybill, 18, of Taneytown (Carroll County) was fifth in the small engines division. And Maryland’s representatives in 4-H automotive care and safety placed about in the middle of the pack, according to Dr. Lee P. Grant, Extension specialist in 4-H and youth mechanical programs at the University of Maryland in College Park.
