By Melina Piper
COCHRANVILLE
There's a phrase that has
become popular of late and it
expresses the thought “I’m
proud to be a farmer’s
daughter.’’ One youth who is
quite exemplary of that idea
is Gwen King, CochranviUe
Rl.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph King, a dairying
couple, Gwen believes that
there’s no better place to
grow up than on a farm.
“I just couldn't imagine
living in the city,” the at
tractive strawberry blonde
explained.
“Out here you have all the
room you need and I love it! ”
While Gwen has not been a
member of any formalized
farm youth organizations,
the young lady has been
active in many school and
community projects.
A senior at Octorara High
School, Gwen is a member
Your dry cows are
crying for attention.
It's easy to treat dry cows like second-class citizens. And it's not hard to
figure out why. You take care of your milking herd first. And probably think
the dry cows are on vacation.
But your Wayne Dealer knows you can’t afford to treat them that way.
Because a dry cow Is on the world's busiest holiday. It’s tune-up time for the
next lactation. It’s the finishing period for her unborn calf. It’s preparation
for the stress of calving Plus the heavy milk production ahead.
Your dry cows need all the help you can give. Don’t let ’em down. That’s
why Wayne has invested so much research on dry cow care.
Let your dealer show you today’s best tune-up for hard-working tired
udders, with the special Wayne dry-cow health and feeding program. Also,
the precise steps to take to prevent most freshenmg-time problems
It all helps you become one of the smart, dairymen who have so little
trouble with their cows. See_your Wayne Dealer. Or, write to Allied Mills,

Gwen is an active member
and works closely with the
Victory Chapel Church in the
CochranviUe area. The
young lady serves as
organist and pianist for
junior church and sub
stitutes for adults church,
helps organize the very
successful bus ministry and
also sing in the choir.
“I enjoy working with the
young people at the church,”
Gwen explained.
“We have quite a number
of them attending and it
keeps us very busy to see
that they all stay in line.”
Gwen devotes several
nights a week to the church
including choir practice and
programs.

Gwen and the young lady has
done her share of milking
and working in the fields.
“I guess I really enjoy
driving the tractor and
working in the fields."
“A lot of girls don’t care
for that part of fanning but I
just like being outside.”
The Kings milk about 60
head of Holsteins and Gwen
is no stranger to the dairy
business. At an earlier age,
Gwen did much of the work
at the barn during milking
but younger brothers and
sisters have now taken over
her duties.
Alternate
Dairy Princess
This past spring, the
Kings’ milk tester suggested
that Gwen should try out for
the Chester County Dairy
Princess Contest.
“At first I thought they
were kidding, but after
thinking about it I thought it
might be fun to try.”

Gwen King
being a farmer’s daughter
Gwen entered the contest
and placed second,
becoming Chester County’s
alternate dairy princess.
Gwen has represented the
dairy enterprise by traveling
to several events including
the Unionville Old Timer’s
Day and the Chester County
Holstein Day. The youth will
also be speaking at several
banquets in the area this fall.
Gwen has some definite
ideas about how milk should
be promoted and is anxious
to work on them. “I feel the
best way to promote
dairying is to get the story
to the younger children.”
“If you can get the ideas to
them then the adults will
follow.”
The Chester County youth
is waiting for next spring to
roll around again since she is
going to enter the contest for
a second time.
An honor student, Gwen is
interested in becoming a
registered nurse. She would
like to specialize in
pediatrics as she enjoys
children.
But no matter where her
studies may take her, Gwen
says she’ll always be glad to
be a farmer’s daughter.
