    USDA issues tentative decision
on egg research and promotion
WASHINGTON - The
U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) an
nounced that evidence
received at a public hearing
Justifies issuing a proposed
nationally coordinated
research and promotion
order for eggs.
USDA's Agricultural
Marketing Service (AMS)
called tor public comments
on its tentative decision by
Sept. 12, after which a final
decision will be made. If the
final decision supports such
a program, egg producers
would vote on it.
AMS Poultry Division
Director Connor Kennett
said the proposed program
would be financed by han
dler-collected assessments
on producers of up to 5 cents
per 30-dozen case of eggs.
Producers not wishing to
participate would be
reimbursed upon written
request.

Money collected would be
used, he explained, to
finance projects dealing with
research, and consumer
education and promotion
designed to strengthen
markets for eggs, egg
products, and spent fowl
(laying hens no longer
productive).
The order is authorized by
the Egg Research and
Consumer Information Act,
passed by Congress and
approved by the President
last October.
USDA’s tentative decision
and order is based on
evidence received at public
hearing sessions held during
May in Atlanta, Ga.,
Philadelphia, Pa., Des
Moines, la., Dallas, Tex.,
and South San Francisco,
Calif.
The program would be
administered by an Egg

the Secretary of Agriculture.
Members would be chosen
from nominations submitted
by eligible organizations,
associations, cooperatives
representing commercial
egg producers, or eligible
producers themselves. Each
of six geographic areas of
the 48 contiguous states
would have at least two, but
not more than four, mem
bers on the initial 18-member
board. The number of
members from each area
would be based on the area’s
proportion of total U.S. egg
production. All producers of
commercial eggs owning
more than 3,000 laying hens
would be included under the
