The Manhelm Chapter had
12 membera representing the
chapter at the 47th annual
FFA Activities Week held
June 17-19 at the Penn
sylvania State University.
They were among the record
enrollment of over 1800 FFA
members.
In the meat judging
contest Dennis Kulp placed
Sth and earned a silver
medal. Steve Hershey placed
9th and earned a bronze. The

Tim Good placed 25th in

bronze. While Dale Martin
placed 29th earning a bronze.
Also in livestock judging was
Dean Ziegler.

In dairy Judging, the
largest contest with over 290
contestants, Darrel Wenger
placed 49th earning a bronze.
Teammate Dale Balmcr
K laced 58th earning a
onorable mention. Larry
Hershey was the other
member of the team.
Dave Keller competed in
the land judging placed 50th
and earning a honorable
mention.
Dave White played his
clarinet in the FFA State
Band which was directed by
Dr. James W. Dunlap,
director of Penn State
University's Blue Band.
Ruby Cinder served as one
of the delegates from the

The internationally
famous Duke Ellington,
Tommy Dorsey and Glenn
Miller Orchestras will be
appearing on the stage of the
York Fair for one night only,
September 10.
The Duke Ellington Or
chestra conducted by
Mercer Ellington. The day
after his father’s funeral in
May 1974 Mercer took the
orchestra to Bermuda to
fulfill a previous com
mitment. In doing so he
faithfully maintained a
tradition established by the
Duke of never disappointing
his fans. Since that time the
orchestra has continued to
play the arrangements and
compositions of Duke
Ellington.
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
known as the sentimental
gentlemen of swing. He
became a musical legend in
his own time. Not only did his
orchestra become number
one in the “hit parade” and
in jukeboxes throughout the
United States and the world,
he showcased such greats as
Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford,
Bunny Berrigan, Buddy
Rich, Nelson Riddle to name
a few. Its been nearly nine
years since the Tommy
Dorsey sound has been
played in public but now the
original arrangements of
“I’ll Never Smile Again”,
“There are Such Things”,

Performing at York
Awards

new ftate officers.
Tim Good was the starting
center fielder on Lancaster’s
state champion FFA softball
team.
Thursday morning’s
general session was an
exciting one. We were en
tertained by the FFA State
Band and FFA State Chorus.
Then the new state officers
were presented to us by the
retiring officers. State
President, Gary Butters,
gave his retiring address.
The session ended with Mr.
Charles F. Lebo, adult
treasurer of the FFA State
Association, presenting the
contest awards.
“Embraceable You”,
“Street of Dreams,”
“Chicago”, and many, many
more will flow from me
stage of the York Fair under
the baton of Murray
McEachern.
The Glenn Miller Or
chestra brings with them a
heritage enjoyed by few.
Directed by Jimmy Hen
derson, the unforgettable
“String of Pearls”, “Penn
sylvania 6-5000”, “Jersey
Bounce,” “Stompin’ at the
Savoy”, will bring to us
great memories of the
inimitable Glenn Miller Big
Band Sound.
Lincoln dub
The Lincoln 4-H Sewing
Club held its 6th meeting
Wednesday morning, at the
Ephrata High School.
The meeting was called to
order by the president Carol
Balmer. After the meeting
Tonya Lehman and Tawnie
Young led members in a
song. Then the girls went
outside and played a game
directed by Nancy Nolt and
Jennifer North. Pictures for
the scrapbook were being
taken.
Most of the girls in the club
are sewing their outfits.
The meetings are held
Wednesday mornings from 9
to 11 a.m. in the Home
Economics rooms of the
Ephrata Senior High School.
