Growing degree days from April 1 at 40 degrees numbered 298 which was 95 below the normal. Degree days at 50 degreees' num bered 76 which recorded at 34 below the normal. The total rainfall from April 1 was 5.82 inches which was 1.62 over the normal. Rainfall for the week measured 2.15. Weather Summary The generous helping of cloudiness sprinkled with abundant rainfall produced another cool wet week in most sections of Penn sylvania. For the sixth consecutive week tem peratures have averaged below normal with a departure of 3 to 6 degrees this week in central and eastern sections. Only the area west of the mountains reached normal levels with the northwest somewhat warmer than normal. In spite of the coolness most places however this was the mildest week since the end of October. An easterly flow of air off the ocean Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday kept temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s in eastern sections while western areas under southwesterly breezes warmed into the 60’s and 70’s. Alan Bair Associate County Agent Eleven Lancaster County* DHIA Supervisors received the “Award of Merit" while attending the spring cpn ference of the Southeastern Pennsylvania DHIA Supervisors. This year’s annual conference was held in Schuylkill County on April 17. The “Award of Merit" is presented annually to those supervisors who qualify and demonstrate that they are providing acceptable service to the dairymen. Basic qualifications are based on two years service, minimum number of herds tested, attendance at conferences, average mailing time and ternoon readings into the upper 60’s and 70’s. A high of 76 degrees was reached several places 'Saturday afternoon. Wet weather in the form of rain and drizzle prevailed most of the week. Rainfall totaled from 0.5 to 1.0 inch in extreme western counties to over 2 inches in several southern areas.
