Do home vegetable gar
dens really offer a hedge
against high food prices?
Most home gardeners-and
that’s nearly half of all
householders-are convinced
that they do. In a recent
Gallup poll, the green thumb
brigade listed “saving
money” as their number one
reason for growing their
own.

Our daughter flew in from
Seattle over Easter time and
spent a lot of energy sorting
her things in the attic and
deciding what to give to
Goodwill Industries.
She brought a 1932 Sears
catalog downstairs and we
were rather surprised at
some of the articles for sale
and also their prices.
You could buy a harness
for a dog, goat, horse, mule
or pony, a David Bradley
hillside plow for $6.50; also
listed was a tractor unit that
fit any Model T or A Ford
chassis for $ll2.
Household items that
caught my eye were an
icebox for a 50 lb. block of ice
$22.85; a kitchen sink hand
pump for $1.40; or a hanging
dining room light fixture for
$5.00. (I happen to know the
present price of $50.) There
was an amazing bargain
chest of 26 pieces of sterling
silver for $35.25. A child’s
school dress $.98; mens
shoes $2.98; auto tire $4.75;
bathing suit $1.89 and a

It seems our work is never
done. I painted the dining
room and then the porch and
there is still more to do.
These are extra Jobs beside
the regular cooking,
cleaning and ironing tasks.
My husband has a lot of
walnut wood to cut and move
as we sold some trees in the
winter and the lumbermen
didn’t complete their work
as we expected.
There is always manure to
haul. I’ve listed these things
because lately I’ve been
listening to other families
discuss the economic
situation and have sensed
their fear of losing their jobs.
Some indeed have already
been laid off. So, I’ve con
cluded that maybe farmers
don’t know how lucky we are
to have our work all laid out
in front of us each morning.
There is only the question of
which job to tackle first and
which one can wait a bit
longer.
