The forecast was made in Harrisburg recently during an economic symposium sponsored by Com monwealth National Bank. Leading the turnaround will be stronger activity in the housing industry, con sumer durables and retailing, areas hard hit by the recession, according to the panel. Experts from industry, government, energy, retailing, agriculture and banking also concurred that economic conditions in the region are generally more favorable than in the rest of the state and country. South central Pennsylvania’s current unemployment rate,. for example, is only half that of the national figure. “Much of what the public reads or hears about the nation’s economic problems comes from Washington or Wall Street,’’ said George L. Morrison, Commonwealth president and chief executive officer. “Most people, however, are con cerned about how inflation, recession and unem ployment affect their daily lives, far from the political and financial power centers. We have attempted to provide shareholders and customers of the Bank with both the macro and micro views of the economy.” Highlights of the two-hour discussion appear in a special section of Com monwealth’s 1974 annual report.
