NATIONAL NUTRITION
WEEK
"Food Fads Fool” Is the
slogan for National Nutrition
Week. Sponsored by the
American Dietetic
Association, the observance
is being celebrated across
the nation all this week.
“DIETITIANS are
seriously concerned about
the wide popularity of food
fads and fad diets,” says
Elsie B. Haff, president of
the dietetic association.
"Some fads are simply a
waste of money, but many
can endanger health if
followed for more than a

As I write this morning
there are still bits of snow
here and there on the wet,
brown fields and the trees
are dark and bare. But, I
hear a robin in the nearby
woodland and several wild
geese are swimming on the
Conestoga and honking
loudly as they paddle up
stream.
Surely spring is coming
and I must take time to in
ventory my seed supplies
and order more for the
coming season. I’m so busy
moving into my new kitchen
and cleaning and waxing
that it is difficult to sit down.
One of my complaints in
dealing with builders is
constantly being told
“everybody does it this way”
and “everybody picks this
item.” Well, I’m not
everybody and rebel at
having certain things in
stalled before I had any
chance to choose or express
my preference.

short time.”
I have to agree when
dietitians point out that
unusual food practices may
not necessarily be bad but all
fads that offer less than the
nutrients we need, or those
that focus on extremes, are
potentially harmful.
WEIGHT CONTROL plans
that offer special gimmicks -
something you take while
you follow their 500 to 600
calories-a-day diet - are to be
avoided. Who wouldn’t lose
weight on only 500 to 600
calories each day? But the
plans usually are sold with
the idea that you also need

In time one can get ac
customed to most anything,
but it does seem that this one
time the windows, the trim
and the plumbing should
have been installed as I
wanted it. Suppose I’ll like
my “saucer rail” instead of
my “plate rail” eventually.
There is one mystery that I
can’t solve, Why are some
people neat and sloppy? In
the same family you can
have the two extremes and
believe me it is difficult for
them to live together.
One room in my house
looks like a cyclone and a
tornado went through it
morning and night. A lady
friend of mine told me she
solved the problem by
closing the door and never
going into the bedroom
through all the teen age
years of her child. Maybe
that is one solution,'but I
can’t accept it and so I keep
hammering away to haue the
mess straightened.
whatever it la that they offer
with the diet plan.
I not only object to the
obvious cost that people
uselessly incur but also to
the potential danger to their
health that may be involved.
As we repeat so often, the
way to lose weight is to eat
leu but eat a nutritionally
balanced diet that gives you
the essentials you need,
without the frills.
AND DON’T EXPECT to
lose weight in a hurry. The
whole process of getting
back to a sensible weight
involves re-training your
eating habits to something
you can live with - for the
rest of your life. A crash
program is not the answer.

HOW DO YOU SPOT a
food fad? The American
Dietetic Aaaoclation
suggests: Food fads always
make pig promises, such as -
1) fantastic health and
longer life;
2) instant slenderness;
3) spiritual awakening, or
inner peace;
4) protest of the Establish
ment - counter-culture
living;
5) cures for ilnesses
(cancer, arthritis, mental
disorders, and a host of
others).
Mrs. Haff also adds: "In
this era of inflation, food fads
also are foolish because of
their high cost.”
