This year Christmas card
lists will probably be
scrutinized more carefully
than usual. The price of 100
cards and 100 postage
stamps can add up to a nice
penny. I just saw a special
hard-back book for sale in
which to keep your list.
My list is typed on a big
sheet of paper and if I can
get it out of the drawer in
December and not cross off
names of people who have
died since last Christmas,
then I feel it’s been a good

year. It is surprising how the
list does vary as new names
are added each year and a
few removed. If only the
Christmas season wasn’t so
busy and we had more time
to enjoy the cards we
received each year.
A few weeks ago we had a
nice visit from a young
Amish couple who hunted
our farm to visit us. Ac
tually, they only lived a short
distance as the crow flies but
twice as far using the roads.
They brought along a
delightful girl and boy of

preschool age but I couldn't
talk to them as I don't know
Pa. Dutch.
However, I discovered a
universal language. The girl
enjoyed the chest full of a
variety of toys and even the
boy was friendly and less shy
when I had a dish of pretzels
for him. Now that our six are
almost all grown, we forget
how it was to have a houseful
of confusion.
When I hear of someone
who got a “letter” in sports
or a trophy, I really feel they
earned it. There is so much
time and practice required
to become proficient in any
area.
My son started practice
and “suicide exercises” as
the teacher called them but
then was cut as only one
third of the fellows could be
on the team.
Practice meant coming on
the activity bus at 6:15 in
stead of the usual 3:15 and it
was a long dark mile from
the bus stop. Why, with all
that wasted energy he could
have painted the bam.
