Over the two-day event, more than 1,700 people were fed and treated to continuous tours of the facility, and tours of neigh boring dairies, a beef ranch and the world famous Monfort Feedlot. The opening Sunday af ternoon program was con ducted by Richard F. Mahan, Regional Sales Manager, American Breeders Service, who in troduced ABS President, Dr. Robert E. Walton, who stated, “We selected the Colorado site for a number of reasons ... availability of land needed for the operations, the weather conditions which prevail, and the political climate." Walton continued, “One of the major reasons for establishing a large stud outside the company’s DeForest, Wisconsin headquarters was to provide a safety valve. “We must assure the safety of our bulls and we cannot rule out the chance of disaster such as weather, fire and, of course, disease. In order to fulfill this safety concept, about 20 percent of this operation will be dairy bulls, with the remaining 80 percent beef to serve the primary interest of the West. “Every effort is made to assume the safety of the animals here,” Walton said. This was very evident when you saw the hundreds- of visitors touring the hew bull barn, wearing the plastic boot covers as a safety precaution. “When fully operational, the new facility will house 180 mature bulls and another 500 young bulls in Progeny Testing Programs,” Walton said. The Wellington, Colorado facility is situated on about 700 acres; much of it is THME-IN-ONE CHAROLAIS SALE at the Farmers Livestock Exchange, Boonsboro, Md. [near Hagerstown, Md.] MONDAY. The present construction plans call for two mature bull bams, of which one is now operational; an admittance bam, which is completed; and the office building, which, when complete, will house offices, laboratories, distribution and storage. Next introduced was Clinton E. Jeffers, Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture, who officially welcomed ABS to Colorado. He praised the addition of the ABS facility to Colorado’s burgeoning beef cattle industry, which plays such a significant role in the state’s economy. Following introductions of special guests, Or. Walton led the group in a cham pagne toast, and an in troduction of the official Open House host, the famous Simmental sire, HUNDRED GRAND. He made his spectacular entrance by bursting through a large paper “Welcome” sign. The host was fittingly dressed for the occasion, being trimmed out in a garland of roses. The official opening was a crowd pleaser to the large, en thusiastic throng in at tendance. Throughout the new office building, ABS had several exhibits explaining their programs and services available to A.1.-minded cattlemen. If you were unable to at tend the ABS Open House, a superior, fun-filled, educational event was missed. However, ABS says visitors are welcome year around at any of their facilities, including the International Headquarters in DeForest, Wisconsin; the Canadian stud at Bragg Creek, just outside of Calgary, Alberta; or this new Wellington, Colorado stud.
