Fruits, Vegetables, & Nuts Bartlett pear supplies will be ample, with output from California, Oregon, and Washington nearly equal to the 1971-73 average but 6 percent under 1973. Prune and plum production in Michigan, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon should be about 10 percent less than last year and 5 percent below the 1971- 73 average. California grape supplies will be ample. The 1974 crop will be slightly under last year’s, but about equal the 1971-73 average. Canned non-citrus fruits will continue tight, but citrus ]oices will be plentiful. At the end of July, Florida frota concentrated orange Juice stocks were 20 percent larger than 1973’s abundant supply. Dried prunes remain ample. This year’s production is expected to run 24 percent less than last year, but be greater than the latest 3-year average. Raisin supplies will be moderate, due mainly to 1973-crop inventories. That crop was 32 percent above the 1970-72 average. Fresh vegetables will be ample and canned vegetables generally adequate. Stocks of most processed tomato products may be heavy. . Frozen vegetables will be in good supply. July 1 stocks were 34 percent above 1973 and 22 percent ahead of the 1971-73 average. Potato supplies are in creasing seasonally. The 1974 summer crop is 11 percent above 1973, and more fall-crop acreage-7 percent over 1973-should boost fall production. July 1 frozen potato stocks were 5 percent above 1973, but 14 percent below the 1971-73 average. Walnuts will be abundant. Production in 1974 should be about 19 percent less than the large 1973 crop but about equal to the 1971-73 average. supplies will be more than adequate, since 1974 production is expected to be much larger than both the 1973 and the 1971-73 averages. GRAINS & LEGUMES Dry bean supplies should be ample, with expected record output 24 percent above last year and the 1971- 73 average. Dry peas and lentils should be ample, with dry peas nearly doubling last year’s crop and totaling 28 percent more than the most recent 3-year average. A larger than average lentil crop is expected. Rice supplies are expected to be fully adequate. A record crop is forecast-15 percent above a year ago and 22 percent above the latest 3-year average. Wheat will be tight but adequate for U. S. needs. The new crop, mostly harvested, is pegged at a record-8 percent above 1973 and 13 percent over the 1971-73 average. Timothy Seed Harvest Rises 17 pet. Production of timothy seed in Pennsylvania is expected to total 945,000 pounds of clean seed, according to the Crop Reporting Service. This forecast Is 17 percent more than last year’s production. The increase is because of more acreage harvested - 9,000 acres this year, com pared with 7,000 last year. Yield per acre harvested is expected to be 105 pounds this year, compared with 115 pounds last year. Nationally, production of timothy seed in 1974 is forecast at 23.0 million pounds. This is 4 percent less than last year’s revised estimate of 23.9 million, but 10 percent more than the 20.9 million pounds produced in 1972. Acreage harvested for seed this year is estimated at 135,700 acres, 12 percent less than last year, but 22 percent above 1972. The national average yield of 169 pounds per acre compared with 156 pounds the previous year and 189 pounds per acre two years ago.
