Judges for the type competition were Winslow Towle, Newton Square, who judged the colored breeds, and Paul King, Delta, who judged Holsteins. Fitting judge for both days was Robert Kessler, associate county agent in Franklin County and showmanship judge was Glenn Shirk, county agent in Chester County. At the Lancaster District Holstein Show on Thursday, Maurice Welk of Quarryville RD2 surprised himself by walking off with the grand champion ribbon in his first year of competition. His nephew, John Welk of Pequea RDI, was the man who led the five-year-old black-and-white beauty into the showring. Reserve champion honors went to Russell Kline, Reinholds, a 19-year-old who’s well-known both in state and local Holstein competition. His four-year old reserve animal started out as an FFA project at Eh prata High School. Klein also showed a junior bull to captured grand champion bull honors. The reserve bull prize went to Clarence and Earl Stauffer, Ephrata RDI. The junior champion Holstein of the show was exhibited by Linda Kauff man, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kauffman, Penn Spring Farms, Elizabethtown RDI.
