Removing Mildew
If you find mildew stains
on clothes and household
articles, it is recommended
to treat such stains as soon
as possible.
Mildew stains are caused
by a fungus, growth. Always
present in the air, the fungus
grows in areas that are
damp, warm, poorly aired
and lighted. Mildew is a thin,
often whitish growth
produced on many kinds of
surfaces. In the home, it is
found most often on cotton,
linen, rayon, silk, wool,
leather, wood and paper.
Many manmade fibers resist
mildew.
In addition to leaving a
musty odor, mildew can

However, if mildew has
penetrated the fibers and has
been there for sometime, the
stain can’t be removed
without damaging the doth.
Mildew discolors the fabrics
and sometimes eats into
them so severely that fabrics
rot and fall apart.
You can use household
bleaches, such as liquid or
granular chlorine bleaches
and powdered bleaches
containing sodium perborate
or monopersulfate to bleach
most mildew stains.
As a general rule, do not
use chlorine-containing
bleaches on wool or silk
because chlorine will yellow
and damage these fabrics.
Some fabrics with special
finishes should not be
bleached with chlorine
either. The finishes may turn
yellow or be removed from
the fabric. Occasionally,
however, such fabrics are
