This is a record high, up $5 over 1973 and nearly four times the $ll sum recorded in the first survey on food costs in 1942. Callup surveys during a quarter century show mat food costs in the United States have increased to a lesser extent than have non food costs. In 1947, food costs repre sented about one-half of the total minimum the public said was needed to make ends meet.
