USDA To Aid
Migrant Workers
The nation’s migrant
workers, many of whom are
fearful of being stranded
without fuel, have been
reassured by government
and industry spokesmen that
they will get the gasoline
they need to follow the crop
harvest northward. Officials
from the Departments of
Agriculture and Labor, the
Federal Energy Office and
other Federal agencies met
with industry represen
tatives to devise a back-up
system that would insure
migrant workers fuel to get
to their jobs. The nation’s
about 190,000 migrants
usually begin long journeys
from tiie south in April. They

Six New Members
Appointed To
Potato Board
Six new members have
been named to the National
Potato Promotion Board by
the U. S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) for
three year terms. Twenty
three current members were
reappointed for similar
terms.
The new members are
Reynold Joel Soucy, Fort
Kent, Maine; Carlton Hays,
Senatobia, Miss.; Odney
Flaat, Grand Forks, N. D.;
Bruce H. Grant, Lyn
donville, Vt; T. Neil Gwyn,
Moses Lake, Wash.; and
Edgar Maghan Jr.,
Freehold, N. Y.
The Board administers the
Potato Research and
Promotion plan, which is
designed to increase con
sumption and expand
domestic and foreign
markets for potatoes, of
ficials of USDA’s
Agricultural Marketing
Service said.
The appointments bring
the board membership to 84,
representing the 48 con
tiguous states. Since there
are no members from
Arkansas or Tennessee,
growers in those states will
be represented respectively
by Mr. Hays of Mississippi
and Vemon G. James, a
holdover member from
North Carolina.
Under the plan, each state
is entitled to one member
plus an additional member
for each five million hun
dredweight of potato
production above the first
of millions.
USDA is instructing
county offices of its
Agricultural Stabilization
and Conservation Service
(ASCS) and the Cooperative
Extension Service to provide
gasoline availability in
formation to migrants.
County ASCS offices, in
addition to being helpful in
telling migrants where to
find fuel will report fuel
shortages involving
migrants through the
already established ASCS
fuel monitoring network.

-A thirsty cow is apt to be bullish about an empty water
trough. And she’d have a legitimate beef if it’s because of a
faulty water system, because you could have bought dependable
Agway equipment to begin with. Then you would ALWAYS have
water when she needs it
But it’s not too late We can offer you a pump tailor-made
for your system, or a system tailor-made for your needs . . .
both of them backed, of course, by Agway’s 40 years of ex
perience in selling newer, better water systems ,
So if water system problems have you hollering calf rope,
hoof it on down to see us We won’t give you a bum steer!
