New Holland USDA To Aid Migrant Workers The nation’s migrant workers, many of whom are fearful of being stranded without fuel, have been reassured by government and industry spokesmen that they will get the gasoline they need to follow the crop harvest northward. Officials from the Departments of Agriculture and Labor, the Federal Energy Office and other Federal agencies met with industry represen tatives to devise a back-up system that would insure migrant workers fuel to get to their jobs. Lancaster 393 3906 Six New Members Appointed To Potato Board Six new members have been named to the National Potato Promotion Board by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for three year terms. Twenty three current members were reappointed for similar terms. The new members are Reynold Joel Soucy, Fort Kent, Maine; Carlton Hays, Senatobia, Miss.; Odney Flaat, Grand Forks, N. D.; Bruce H. Grant, Lyn donville, Vt; T. Neil Gwyn, Moses Lake, Wash.; and Edgar Maghan Jr., Freehold, N. Y. The Board administers the Potato Research and Promotion plan, which is designed to increase con sumption and expand domestic and foreign markets for potatoes, of ficials of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service said. The appointments bring the board membership to 84, representing the 48 con tiguous states. Since there are no members from Arkansas or Tennessee, growers in those states will be represented respectively by Mr. Hays of Mississippi and Vemon G. James, a holdover member from North Carolina. Under the plan, each state is entitled to one member plus an additional member for each five million hun dredweight of potato production above the first of millions. USDA is instructing county offices of its Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) and the Cooperative Extension Service to provide gasoline availability in formation to migrants. County ASCS offices, in addition to being helpful in telling migrants where to find fuel will report fuel shortages involving migrants through the already established ASCS fuel monitoring network.
