30 —Lancaster Farming. Saturday, April 6. 1974 Dr. Robert Herr, kneeling, explains a few things Woods is in charge of the Eastern Lancaster about sheep rearing and shearing to Brecknock County school district's elementary ag program sixth graders as teacher James Woods looks on. this year. The satisfaction that comes from doing a good job of farming It’s a great feeling to know that you are the master of your farmlands ... that when you treat your soil right, it will treat you right. Liming is one of the most im portant factors in keeping your soil in the highest productive range. A good pasture with a pH of 6.5 or higher, for example, will make 300 to 400 lbs. of beef per acre and produce up to $lOO gross income per acre. This means with the help of lime, profits from pastures can compare favorably with feed or grain crops. w 4*' 7 •* y, no radiator no water pump no water hoses no anti-freeze Deutz does it (SAY DOYT2) with its air-cooled diesel engine I And because it's air cooled, your eutz Iractor cy ' mtier head can run 100° hotter - provide complete fuel combustion You get more mileage more power no carbon build-up or smoke Come see this world renowned tractor in action Then compare' A I STAUFFER fed DIESEL, Inc. 312 W Mam St New Holland, Pa Ph 717 354-4181 0 *^!3k ‘There’s A Sheep In the ClassroomV Once again, this week, it was sheep shearing time for sixth-graders in the Eastern Lancaster County School District. This was the seventh year in a row that Dr. Robert Herr shared his shears with students in the school district’s elementary ag program. Lancaster Farming went to the lesson Tuesday morning at Brecknock Elementary, near Bowman sville, to see how the 24 youngsters in Ed Harris' class reacted to a sheep in their midst. Now, Mary’s little lamb, you’ll recall, made the children laugh and play. While the Brecknock students may have been guilty of a few giggles, they didn't play and they did learn a lot about sheep, the art of shearing and the importance of wool. I XI The highlight of the lesson came when Herr placed the shears in the hands of students, one teacher and an unsuspecting farm reporter, all of whom took a swipe. The sheep, needless to say, had less than a perfect haircut. Under the watchful eye of the man who owns the sheep, Sue Burkhart, Denver RDI, gingerly removes a strip of fleece. Jeff Brendle, Mohnton RD2, proved that he could shear a sheep without drawing blood. LOOSEN UPyour timing...
