don’t have to trade in five or
ten pieces of your scrapiron
that nobody else wants. This
year with used stuff what it
is, new equipment looks
better than ever if, however,
your dealer can get it for
you.
A recent article in “Suc

refers to machinery in
vestment in the vicinity of
$lOO per acre. That, of
course, means that to farm
100 acres you should have
around $lO,OOO invested in
equipment. I would expect
that most of you are over
that figure which means that
according to economists, you
are over-equipped. Of course
you don’t have much of an
alternative other than to
share equipment or have

which have serious
drawbacks. There are,
however, many farmers
which have much too large of
equipment for the acreage
that they are farming. To
farm one hundred and fifty
acres of rotational crops, you
don’t need a five plow
tractor, but guys still buy
them. What really makes me
laugh is a guy who thinks he
needs the efficiency of a five
or six bottom plow yet plants
corn with a two row planter.
I think the key here is
common sense, and if it
makes you feel any better,
put an air conditioned cab on
your 30 horsepower tractor
and you’ll at least feel like a
big-time operator.
In conclusion, remember
that if you buy something at
a sale this winter like a com
planter, don’t wait until May
10th to see if it works.
