For several years he edited “Fungicide and Nematicide Tests,” published by the American Phytopathological Society. His control program for an extremely severe disease known as cherry leaf spot was widely accepted as it paid particular attention to market quality of the fruit. He summarized his work with cherry leaf spot in the 1953 U. S. Department of Agriculture Yearbook, “Plant Diseases.” He initiated and maintained one of the first sources of virus indexed cherry budwood. In association with Professor Asquith, Lewis pioneered the use of con centrate sprays in deciduous fruit orchards. Commercial application of concentrate sprays was accepted in Pennsylvania much earlier than in other regions primarily due to the efforts of these men and their associates. Lewis improved the un derstanding and control of several once serious diseases such as black knot of plum, sooty blotch, fly speck, and brown rot petal blight. Over the years, Lewis and associates developed one of the most extensive spray trails in the United States.
