Compared with Wed
nesday: Prices unchanged
for all fresh meats.
However, meat wholesalers
confronting very poor
movement and struggling to
realize dollar returns in line
with up trend particularly
for railstocks. Uncertainties
regarding transportation of
meats has created some talk
that several New York
operators cannot afford to
remain open after Friday
unless some guarantee for
delivery next week will be
forthcoming in the mean
time.

Thursday, January 31
Despite a midweek sag,
closing prices on slaughter
steers and heifers were 1.00-
2.00 higher than the full dose
of the proceeding week.
Cows closed 50 cents lower
and bulls weak. The feeder
supply was hardly sufficient
to afford a good test of the
trade.
Four day receipts 18,500 as
compared 25,600 previous
week and 15,700 a year ago.
Slaughter steers ap
proximately 45 percent,
heifers 32 percent, overall
finish attractive although
many carrying considerable
mud. Cows 12 percent,
feeders 5 percent.
Fed cattle prices con
tinued to follow a very
erratic pattern with wide
day-to-day fluctuations. A
Monday run of only 3300
sparked a sharp upturn in
forced trading as buyers
scrambled for numbers to
meet immediate
requirements, However,
much of the advance on
steers was lost as supplies
expanded and there was a
growing concern over the
availability of transportation
facilities for moving the
finished product eastward,
and particularly beyond
Chicago.
