—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 5,1974 60 Penn State Will Host Vegetable Conference Innovations in vegetable and small fruit production-including new concepts in trickle irrigation, wholesale market packaging, and recycling vegetable wastes-will be featured at the annual Vegetable Converence February 11-13 on The Pennsylvania State University main campus. ‘Topics of interest to food processors will be presented the afternoon of February 12 and the morning of February 13,” said Dr. Peter A. Ferretti, assistant professor of horticulture ex tension at Penn State and con ference chairman The conference, to be held in the J. 0. Keller Building, is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association, Pennsylvania Food Processors Association, and Penn State Department of Horticulture. Keynote speaker will be Or. William H. Carlson, associate professor of horticulture at Michigan State University, discussing “Facts and Fantasies in the Bedding Plant Industry.” Dr. Carlson, who received three degrees from Penn State, is executive secretary of Bedding Plants, Inc., and is associate editor of the American Vegetable Grower magazine. G. Wendell Boice, marketing manager for Chapin Water matics Inc., of Watertown, N.Y., will present the latest in formation on trickle irrigation, a new concept in plant watering being used extensively in parts of the United States, Europe, and Africa. “Small Fruit Production In novations Around the World” will be discussed by George E. Mc- Connell, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, a fruit grower and writer for the American Fruit Grower magazine. McConnell sells over 700,000 strawberry plants each year and recently started growing a number of vegetable crops for “pick-your-own” harvest. “Subject matter on small fruit production was added to the conference program for the first time this year in response to grower’s needs,” Dr. Ferretti punts out.
