For Farmer Co-ops
Farmer cooperatives’ spending
for technical research nearly
doubled during the past five
years. The increase is reflected
in a study by U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s Farmer
Cooperative Service.
In the same time span,
business research expenditures
by farmer cooperatives in
creased 140 percent. Average
business research spending per
cooperative went from $47,000 in
1967 to $114,000 in 1972. Mean
while, technical research
spending per association jumped
from $146,000 to $272,000.
About one-third of the
cooperatives with volumes under
$lOO,OOO conducted research,
while nearly two-thirds of those
with volumes of more- than
$lOO,OOO did so.
Of the 55 cooperatives repor
ting research activities, 34 said
they maintained formal business,
technical, or combined business
and technical research depa
