This year we are reminded ot Christmas traditions growing out of simpler times. An energy crisis has given us a reason to re-evaluate the neon and gaudiness that has come to dominate so much of our modern Christmas celebration. A distrubed Nation has paused this Christmas to ponder the eternal message of hope that accompanies the holiday. A hymn of the season best ex presses that theme with these words; “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight,” LANCASTER SILO CO., INC. 2436 Creek Hill Rd. or 2008 Horse Shoe Rd. But most of all, we are reminded of the simple surroundings that were so much a part of that majestic event we celebrate at Christmastide - the birth of Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem. That birth was fitting for a man who would bring to turbulent times, not the solutions of power, wealth and conquest, but a divine ‘message of love and hope. Somewhere in the glitter and tinsel we lost sight of some of the Christmas meaning. Among plastic poinsettias and Santa candles, we found it difficult to divorce the true Christmas spirit from Christmas commercialism. But 1973 is a little different. It is fashionable this year to look to the more basic Christmas traditions, and the experience may serve to restore some of the optimism and faith that have been so battered in recent days. The people who have decided to forego Christmas lights this year may discover the beauty that persuaded our ancestors to begin decorating in the first place. It is said, for instance, that the decorated Christmas tree tradition is partly of early German origin and was observed as late as 1747 by Moravian settlers in Pennsylvania. It in volved decorating shelves of pyramid-shaped stands with candies and apples. ' r l If beauty, once again, can be •* Jag % 1 FOR SALE EXTRA NICE GROUPS OF HOLSTEIN STOCKERS AND FEEDERS Castrated. And on such small beginnings, hope and faith are built. \ If we find the time this year to seek out the real joy of Christ mas, perhaps optimism will begin to replace fear in our collective minds. For it seems to me that the joy of the season is that the world takes time to reaffirm its faith that, in one way or another, men of good will prevail and move the world toward a brighter future. Therein lies true hope for a nation like ours where men are free to guide their own destinies. The Christmas wish that my family and I would like to convey to you and yours is one with a long - tradition. Where there is turmoil, may Christmas bring peace; where there is despair, may Christmas bring hope; and where there is sorrow, may Christmas bring joy. Have a happy holiday! Use Sharp Tools While Cutting Wood Be careful while cutting wood this winter, cautions Edward P. Farrand, Extension forester at The Pennsylvania State University. Make sure axe handles are strong and solidly mounted; stop motor of power chain saw while filling with gas. Always carefully follow manufacturers’ instructions on handling and use of power saws.
