Food Program An estimated 14.5 million people took part in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) family food programs in September. This was a decrease of 90,000 from the previous month, and down 115,000 from the same month a year ago. Preliminary figures released today show participation in the food stamp program in Sep tember held at an estimated 12.2 million people, the same as August, but an increase of 300,000 over September 1972. The value of bonus food stamps totaled $186.1 million in September. This represents an increase of $lOO,OOO over August, and $11.5 million more than September a year ago. The number of people taking part in the food (hstribution program in September totaled 2.3 million. This was a decrease of 70,000 from the previous month, and a decline of 400,000 from September 1972, as projects continued to switch from food distribution to food stamps. An estimated 24.6 million children took part in the national school lunch program in Sep tember, the first month of the school year.
