Eastern states by judging three classes of sheep, beef cattle and hogs. The competitors were required to give oral reasons for one class of each three animals. In beef cattle judging, the Pennsylvania team placed third. They placed fourth in both sheep and hog judging. CLEARANCE The Estate of Shearer Tire Dist. Ed Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Hess Jr., Strasburg RDI, placed fifth in the overall in dividual competition scoring. 523 out of a possible 600 points. Ed also placed sixth in the individual hog judging com petition. Other members of the Penn sylvania team were Jeff Greider, Columbia RD2; Rick Hess, Strasburg RDI; and Joe Lefever, Manheim RD4. The contest was won by the Maryland team which scored 1,587 points. Virginia’s team placed second with 1,546 points while Georgia’s team finished third with 1,528. The local team, in finishing fourth, scored 1,514 points followed by Ohio for fifth place with 1,469. The other teams were from West Virginia and Indiana. The next competition for the» Lancaster County quartet will be at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday. The Keystone contest is the stepping stone for the national judging contest to be held in Chicago November 23. PA Grain Stocks Down From 1972 Stocks of corn, wheat, oats and barley stored in Pennsylvania on October 1 totaled 34.7 million bushels, according to the Crop Reporting Service. This was 11 percent less than total stocks of the same grains a year ago, and includes grains stored on farms and off farms. Wheat stocks were 7.6 million bushels, 30 percent less than a year ago. On-farm stocks were down 32 percent; off-farm stocks were down 30 percent. The amount of old crop corn stored was 8.9 million bushels, 11 percent less than a year ago. On farm stocks declined 25 percent, but off-farm stocks increased 34 percent. Total stocks of oats were 13.9 million bushels, up 5 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks were up 3 percent, and off-farm stocks were 46 percent higher. Barley stocks were 4.3 million bushels, down 12 percent from year-ago levels. On-farm stocks were 11 percent lower, and off farm stocks were 17 percent lower. US. stocks of all grains on October 1,1973 were below a year ago. Stocks of the four feed grains (corn, oats, barley and sorghum) totaled 45.5 million tons, 26 percent less than holdings on October 1, 1972.
